EVAKELIA

Creative combination of art and fashion.

EVAKELIA FASHION, starts with the collection of the project “The Oldies” which includes handmade creations from natural fibres, cotton, linen, wool and silk fabrics as well as woven hand looms. It is a series of unique and collectible dresses, silk scarves and bags designed for the modern woman. The artistic pattern of the black-clad, hunchbacked elderly lady with the headscarf and the cane (“mangoura”) in her hand, is woven on a manual loom, applied on the garment embroidered by hand and on a manual machine, and printed on silk fabrics.

about-story

Τwo generations of women, Christina and Evangelia, mother and daughter, renegotiate and reinvent their relationship with the long-standing family traditions, morals and beliefs, which concern femininity. Treasuring memories, images, fragments of personal stories and biographies (sometimes heroic) of the stooped black-clad women of their village, with the headscarf and the cane (“mangoura”), they pay tribute to the anonymous elderly ladies of the Greek territory, who now become the motif that adorns every handicraft with the signature Evakelia. Let us recall, that the black-clad figures of women have repeatedly followed Greek history from the dawn of the first historical years to the present day, functioning uninterruptedly as the symbol of an endless line of women, with a common view, intention and behaviour in life, defined by the rules of patriarchy.

Christina has been a creator of handmade women’s clothing since 1989. She draws her creative inspiration from the folklore and cultural elements of the Greek tradition associated with the habits of the grandmother, the woman of the 20th century, such as embroidery, crochet, knitting and weaving.

Evangelia Goula is a visual artist and a documentary director, specialising in Observational Cinema. She approaches sensitive issues of social and anthropological content through a visual artist’s way, focusing on the folklore and cultural heritage of Greece. She graduated from Athens School of Fine Arts in 2011 with her series of artwork “THE OLDIES”. In 2017, she successfully completed her Postgraduate Studies programme “Digital Forms of Art” Master’s Degree (Athens School of Fine Arts -Visual Arts Department), with the ethnographic documentary “I TSAI ROMINI-THE CHILD WOMAN”. Her works of art have been presented in a lot of Greek collective exhibitions and her documentaries have been shown in a lot of famous Greek and international festivals, receiving multiple awards.

PRODUCTION STUDIOS

About Us

The Workshop

All products are exclusively designed and crafted at our workshop based in Thessaloniki. We are a small-scale production studio that began in 1989, specializing in handmade knitted garments, accessories, and women’s clothing. Our inspiration comes from Greek tradition, and we create clothing and accessory applications tailored for the modern woman.

Knitted Production

Our products are handmade from yarns with natural fibers, crafted with knitting needles and crochet hooks. Crochet is an art of weaving that was once a staple of women’s handicrafts, decorating every household. Women of the 20th century, now known as THE OLDIES, used to weave and embroider crafts for decorative coverings and even clothing. Crochet and knitting were essential activities for every woman back then, and their skill in these crafts made them stand out socially.

The Weaving Art of Our Grandmothers

Our fabrics with the artistic design THE OLDIES are exclusively crafted on traditional wooden looms. The art of loom weaving was also a female craft, involving the creation of clothing and textiles by the homemakers of the past.

SILK WEAVING

Silk weaving was also exclusively women’s work. Our silk scarves are produced in Soufli from 100% high quality silk and are digitally printed with the artistic pattern THE OLDIES. Each design is offered in limited edition.
